Bibhuti
Dash is a Delhi based watercolourist.
This is the first solo exhibition by him. Most of his works relate to the daily life of
common people busy with earning their livelihood.
To
him, the greater purpose of art is to find intrinsic value than mere visual
representation of a routine activity. A dispassionate glance at a person
struggling with machines and tools associated with his livelihood may appear to
be mundane and nondescript. But when seen in unison with emotions and feelings
i.e. the hopes and despairs, the expectations and the troubles in the life of
the subject, things change surprisingly. The finer and meaningful aspects come
to the forefront, which give the raison d'être to life. Artistic empathy
with these feelings can transform these routine happenings to nothing short of
miracles.
Once the artist develops such sensitivity, art
goes way beyond the application of inert colour pigments to a lifeless surface. It
surpasses the conventional notion of visual aesthetics. Divine breaks itself
into sweat and toil. Shovels, hammers, needles, fishing nets turn into
demigods. The monotonous sound of tools becomes euphonious chanting. A loaf of
bread earned at the end of the hard day’s work symbolises the miracle of
existence and last but not the least…the person who woke up as an ordinary,
meek, fearful individual at the sunrise, finds himself to be the glorified doer
of miracles at the sunset...the miracles of sweat, hope and existence have
metamorphosed him into a mortal God!!!
